Every year, as we approach the Christmas holidays, streets become crowded with people and motorists. This is largely due to the rush of preparations for the festive season.
Unfortunately, this time of year also sees an increase in robberies, which is why we must all stay alert and aware of our surroundings to ensure safety at all times.
Danny Mofokeng (not his real name) has issued a warning to motorists who often use the N1 highway near Carousel Casino to be cautious of criminals who use spikes to rob drivers.
Speaking to Hamitown, Mofokeng shared that he was born in Maubane and grew up in the area. As a young man, he witnessed crime in the kasi, but he said it has worsened over the years.
His concern is that every year during this period, the community wakes up to news of someone being killed at night.
In recent years, the community has experienced a new and alarming form of crime, where criminals place spikes on the road to target unsuspecting motorists. According to Mofokeng, on December 25 last year, a middle-aged motorist was killed after his car’s tire was punctured on the N1 near Carousel Casino. Tragically, this was not the first time such an incident occurred.
“These days, thugs have taken their activities to busy roads. They use spikes to commit acts of crime,” Mofokeng explained. He added that while this happens throughout the year, it seems to get worse as Christmas approaches.
A paramedic who attended the crime scene, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the reader’s account. “Last year, on December 25, we found a motorist killed near Carousel, and spikes were seen along the road,” the paramedic said.
