A man has been arrested after police allegedly found him in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition while travelling in a taxi along the R101 near Hammanskraal.

According to a statement issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Temba, members of the Crime Prevention Unit acted on information received about a man carrying a firearm in a taxi. Officers obtained a description of the vehicle and its registration details before launching a search.

Police successfully traced and stopped the taxi on the R101 at around 6:40pm.

All occupants were searched, and officers allegedly found a firearm tucked into the suspect’s waistband.
The man was asked to produce a valid firearm licence but was unable to do so.

He was subsequently arrested and taken to the Temba Police Station for further investigation.

Police later established that the firearm belongs to a security company where the suspect claimed to be employed.

He was detained on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
