China’s Foreign Ministry has spotlighted the remarkable completion of the Western Mining Railway in Algeria, a groundbreaking achievement hailed as Africa’s first heavy-haul railway constructed across the vast Sahara Desert.
Spanning 575 kilometers, this strategic line connects key mining areas in the southwestern province of Tindouf—most notably the massive Gara Djebilet iron ore deposit—with industrial zones and transport hubs, including Béchar, ultimately facilitating efficient links to ports for export.
The railway forms a vital artery in Algeria’s broader infrastructure network, unlocking long-dormant mineral resources and supporting the country’s ambition to revitalize its mining and steel sectors.
The project was executed primarily by China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC), in close partnership with Algerian state-owned enterprises.
Construction progressed remarkably swiftly, with full track-laying completed in just over 24 months despite extreme environmental challenges: scorching temperatures often exceeding 50°C, relentless sandstorms, shifting dunes, and severe water scarcity.
Crews overcame these hurdles by employing innovative techniques, such as nighttime concrete pouring for structural integrity, and adapting designs to integrate both Chinese heavy-haul expertise and local standards.
The line was finished several months ahead of the original schedule, setting new records for desert railway engineering in Africa.
Engineered to heavy-haul specifications, the railway supports 32.5-tonne axle-load freight trains and can accommodate passenger services reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h. It is designed to transport substantial volumes of cargo—initial estimates point to capacities supporting tens of millions of tons annually, with projections for even higher throughput as mining operations scale up. This infrastructure is expected to play a pivotal role in ramping up production at Gara Djebilet, one of the world’s largest untapped iron ore deposits (estimated at around 3.5 billion tonnes), enabling processed ore to reach domestic steel plants like the Tosyali complex and potentially boosting Algeria’s export revenues significantly.
As a flagship initiative under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the Western Mining Railway exemplifies deepening Sino-Algerian cooperation in infrastructure development.
Beyond resource extraction, it promises broader socioeconomic benefits: improved regional connectivity across North and West Africa, job creation during and after construction, technology transfer through training programs for local staff, and stimulation of downstream industries such as steel production and manufacturing.
This project underscores a shift toward practical, large-scale investments in African infrastructure, helping transform remote desert regions into economically viable zones while advancing Algeria’s goals of industrial diversification and self-reliance in mineral processing.
With test runs already underway and full operations anticipated soon, the railway stands as a symbol of mutual benefit and long-term strategic partnership between China and Algeria.
