Moretele Local Municipality, one of the rural municipalities in the North West Province, has long faced challenges with insufficient electrical infrastructure.

Many households in the community rely on fossil fuels like coal for heating, particularly during the cold winter months. Recognizing the importance of addressing this issue, the municipality’s local economic development initiatives have prioritized electricity and renewable energy solutions.

Solar energy has predominantly been used for domestic and individual needs in the area. However, a new partnership with the Korean Power Solar Consortium is set to transform this landscape. The consortium plans to construct a 100 MW solar farm in Mogogelo village, with an additional 200 MW capacity planned for the same site, pending necessary approvals from the local municipal council.

This project is expected to provide significant benefits for the municipality, including job creation and a boost to the local economy.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Moretele Mayor Masango Manyike emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating that the project will bring much-needed socio-economic improvements to Moretele.
