Soweto Police have launched a manhunt for a 27-year-old Soweto man wanted in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, whose body was discovered in a backroom in Orlando East nearly a week after she was last seen alive.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has identified the suspect as Simiso Silomo Phakathi and has urged him to surrender to the nearest police station. Authorities say a J50 warrant of arrest for murder has already been issued.

According to police, 37-year-old Jabulisile Josephina Tshabalala was last seen alive on 7 August 2026. Her body was found on 13 August inside the backroom where she had been living with Phakathi.

Police allege that Tshabalala had been stabbed to death and that her body was concealed beneath blankets and clothing.

The appeal comes as SAPS marks Women’s Month by intensifying efforts to combat Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), with a renewed focus on tracking down suspects accused of crimes against women, children and other vulnerable groups.

“The SAPS is issuing a firm warning to the suspect: hand yourself over to the police at the nearest police station without delay. There is nowhere to hide, and police will continue pursuing every lead until you are brought before a court of law,” the police said in a statement.

Investigators have described Phakathi as dangerous and urged members of the public not to approach him.

Anyone who sees the suspect or has information about his whereabouts is urged to contact Warrant Officer Zwane on 082 455 8572 or report the information to the nearest police station.

Police have also appealed to the public not to harbour or assist the wanted suspect, saying any information could prove critical in ensuring justice is served.

“As the country marks Women’s Month, the SAPS reiterates that violence against women will not be tolerated. Those responsible for such heinous crimes will be pursued and brought before the courts to face the full might of the law,” the statement said.

The investigation into the murder is continuing.
