The Department of Arts and Culture recently hosted the vibrant Ishashalaza arts competition in Gauteng, Pretoria, bringing together talented performers from across the region.
The event, held in March 2025, showcased the richness of South African arts through dance, theatre, and poetry, with Hammanskraal emerging as the standout winner in all categories.
The Spirit of Ishashalaza
Ishashalaza—a name derived from a Zulu expression meaning “to shine brightly” or “to dazzle”—lived up to its reputation as a platform for artists to showcase their creativity and cultural pride. The competition aimed to unearth and celebrate local talent while fostering unity and artistic exchange among different regions.
Two-Tiered Competition Structure
The event was structured in two phases:
- Intra-Regional Competitions – Artists first battled within their own regions to earn a spot in the finals.
- Inter-Regional Showdown in Cullinan – The best of the best faced off in a thrilling finale held in Cullinan, where Hammanskraal’s representatives dominated across the board.
Hammanskraal Sweeps the Awards
The winning teams from Hammanskraal proved unstoppable:
- Dance Category: Segarona Cultural Group wowed the judges with their energetic and precise movements, taking home top honors.
- Theatre Category: Magic Bones Theatre delivered a powerful performance, blending storytelling and drama to secure their victory.
- Poetry Category: Queens of Metaphor mesmerized the audience with their lyrical prowess and thought-provoking verses.
A Celebration of Art and Heritage
The Ishashalaza competition not only highlighted exceptional talent but also reinforced the importance of preserving and promoting South Africa’s diverse cultural expressions. The Department of Arts and Culture praised all participants for their dedication and encouraged continued artistic growth.
As the curtains closed on this year’s event, Hammanskraal’s artists stood tall as champions, proving that their creativity and passion shine the brightest. With such success, anticipation is already building for next year’s edition of Ishashalaza.
