On Thursday, 5 June 2025, Director-General of the Department of Social Development (DSD), Mr Peter Netshipale, hosted a Chinese Research Delegation, where he introduced the Department’s core programmes and the work of its key agencies, including the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and the National Development Agency (NDA).

The Chinese delegation, led by Professor DU Zhenli, Director of the Department of Economic Cooperation Business, visited South Africa to engage on the development and implementation of a pilot Poverty Alleviation Programme.

The project is set to be piloted in the village of Kgomo-Kgomo, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Moretele Local Municipality in the North West Province. The municipality is based in Mathibestad.

During the meeting, DG Netshipale emphasised government’s continued efforts to strengthen the pillars of social protection, accelerate inclusive economic growth, create employment opportunities, and reduce poverty—particularly among vulnerable communities.

The Chinese delegation, alongside the DSD Portfolio Technical Committee, began a three-day feasibility study for the pilot project.

As part of this visit, they are scheduled to meet with officials from the Moretele Local Municipality in Mathibestad to explore collaborative approaches and assess conditions for implementation.
